Encouraging Summer Reading

When I think of summer, I think of reading. I love to encourage free reading all summer long, and finding reading programs with book-ish rewards only adds to the fun.We love using our summer free time for free reading. Check out the summer reading ideas.

Summer Reading Programs

We are just sticking with a couple of reading programs this summer.

Library programs. We love to join our library’s summer reading program. They usually include activities on the chart, so fulfilling the reading program will include doing a STEM activity or reading specific books or singing someone a nursery rhyme. We love our local librarians and they know my kids’ names. The library is one of our favorite places.

Barnes and Noble reading program. The Barnes and Noble program also rewards readers with a free book, to be selected from their list. Kids only need read and record 8 books in order to get the prize. It’s for kids going into 1st through 6th grade, and my soon-to-be first grader is super excited that she’s already read one whole book by herself!

Half-Priced Books. Half-Priced Books is a thrift store, and their Feed Your Brain summer reading program prize for reading 300 minutes (about 15 minutes per day) in June and/or July is book bucks for buying a book of the child’s choice in the store! Both of my kids are eager for June to get here so they can start counting minutes.

To stretch ourselves out of our comfort reading, I may also consider my own Badges for Books program!

My kids already love reading (and so do I). While these programs are not necessary for our own summer reading enjoyment, it just makes reading even more fun. What summer reading programs will you join?
