What do you do for fun when it’s too yucky to play outside?
I’ve really been trying to keep the kids away from the tablet and television shows (especially my daughter, who is electronic-device obsessed). One of this week’s activities was “excavating” toys from a deep bowl of rice (aka “dirt”). This easy indoor excavation activity will have kids digging for familiar items in a bowl of rice. 
We buried our dinosaur, baby elephant, and other small plastic toys, like my kids’ fast food freebies. Strawberry loved digging through the not-so-messy dirt to find her items. I loved the fact that the dried rice was simple and easy to clean up.
Even Raisin got in to the fun. He wanted a turn to dig. He was methodical with a scooping tool, much more so than his younger sister. And of course, once every item was found, it was time to start over again!
I figured that our indoor excavation activity would keep the kids busy for ten minutes or so. I was surprised when Strawberry insisted on re-excavating her toys for nearly an hour!
It would be easy to make this an even more educational activity. We just buried some favorite small plastic toys. But, I recently spotted these dinosaur fossils. I’ll bet that would be a lot of fun to dig for as well!

I love the simplicity of this activity. It is easy to set up but lots of fun to dig around in and really get the kids imaginations going at the same time. I can’t wait to set this up for my kids. Thanks so much for joining in with our A-Z of Indoor Activities.
