When our school year is over, we have a break from the regular routine. This means that our regular family scripture study is disturbed as well! I feel that it is super important to keep reading throughout the summer. I want my kids to join our fun summer reading programs, but I also want to make sure they find time every day to read scriptures. I created some reading tracking charts to help us keep track of our participation during the summer months.
During the school year, our family begins each school day with a small and simple devotional of some kind. This includes both my homeschool daughter as well as my kids who go to school. But with the coming of summer, our days change. Now my kids have swim team at different times every morning, among other things! So although we are now freer from school schedules, sitting down for devotional time has not been happening as consistently!
However, I feel strongly that it is important that my kids get scripture reading into their days, and personal scripture time is important. I want scripture reading to start as a habit early!
I decided to make a simple summer scripture reading log check off. I don't require my kids to read anything in particular. Instead, I ask that they each read something from the scriptures by himself every day. Even just a verse.
Using a simple check off sheet makes this not too overwhelming, and hopefully I can help my young children develop a new habit. I believe I’ll take on the challenge too and improve my own neglected personal scripture reading habit.
When people think about summer reading, the majority probably don't think about scripture reading! "Summer reading" is one of the constants in our modern world, thank goodness!
Reading throughout the summer helps us exercise our reading skills. It is pretty hard to jump back into school if we haven't been reading at all during the summer months!
Many places (bookstores, libraries, and online sites) have summer reading programs to join. Since I was already making my summer scripture reading chart, I decided to also include summer reading themed options checklists.
I've made charts with different designs, as well as ones with just the summer months and ones with all the months of the year. (The one with all the months of the year maybe a bit overwhelming for some kids!)
My youngest has fallen in love with ereading! The Kindle makes it easy for her to track how long she has read. It provides an easy to hold format to keep her place in a book, and it lets her enlarge the text as much as she wants.
But my other kids prefer physical reading. When I’m reading a real book, I’m always in need of a bookmark. with my summer reading tracking charts, I've included summer bookmarks. I think the full color bookmarks are deliciously pretty to look at. That said, the black and white options let our kids get creative as they decorate their own bookmarks for summer reading.
