Long versus Short Vowels provides two games and four worksheets for determining long vowel sounds and short vowels sounds as a student practices reading silent e and non-silent e words.

Included in this pdf file is a puzzle match game, a file folder sort game, and four worksheets in both color and black and white with answer key.

  • In the puzzle match game, students should match the long vowel sound (the left) to the short vowel sound (the right) as they practice reading the words aloud. It uses self-correcting puzzle cards.
  • The file folder sort game has two “boards” to print and attach to two sides of a file folder and then 15 images (with words) to place on the proper side of the file folder.
  • The Long or Short Vowels? page provides 8 sentences with a bold word. Students must circle either Long or Short to coincide with the sound the bold word makes.
  • The Silent e or no silent e? worksheet provides a few sentences with a missing word and two spelling options for finishing the sentence. The student should decide between two spellings and write the correct spelling on the primary-grade lines.
  • The Long or short sounds? page asks students to mark the long vowel sounds or the short vowel sounds as well as any words with double phonograms.
  • The “English words do not end in u or v” page provides a few sentences that have words ending in u or v that do not necessarily follow the “silent e makes the vowel say its name” rule.” The student should rewrite the misspelled word on the primary-grade lines.
