Discuss author’s purpose by discussing writing to persuade, writing to inform, and writing to entertain. Categorize the 20 task cards in a center or as a class. Why would a student categorize each item as they do?

Review these passages with students. A recording sheet with the question “WHY?” is provided. Also, the provided answer key shares a few reasons and alternatives why students would choose the author’s purpose in various categories. Can your student explain their reasoning to support their answer? Doing so will help them understand the nuances of author’s purpose. Can they rewrite a passage to be a different category?
