Color Mixing Fine Motor Activity

I’m quickly finding that my preschooler needs hands on interactive fun. When she gets home from preschool it’s a little bit before lunch time, so without an activity, she’ll whine until the food is served. This week’s favorite activity was a color mixing fine motor water activity using food coloring and a kid-sized dropperMixing colored water using a dropper provided fine motor practice as well as basic color mixing fun!

Strawberry loved mixing colors. I purchased a simple dropper for her to use. We had medicine droppers, but this one is much more fun with a zig-zagging end and a larger bulb at the top. I used a little bit of food coloring in each clear bowl. I did not use much water, because once the colors got muddied, I dumped them out and refilled them.

Strawberry loved picking up the water with the dropper and putting it in another bowl. She got great fine motor practice with squeezing the bulb on the dropper. She also loved watch the colors mix together to form new colors. It looked like magic!

By the end, of course, the colors were pretty much muddied together. She wanted to redo this activity many times so she could see the colors changing again and again!

This was a perfect “busy” activity for the kitchen table. Yes, the table got wet. But it was easy to clean up, and it certainly kept Strawberry happy while I got food ready!
